Caltech jumped to fifth in the US News list - and won a $1 billion telescope

The institute's biggest ranking climb in more than 25 years landed the same week NASA selected PRIMA, with JPL building it and IPAC running the science centre.

Two Caltech stories in one September describe the same trade-off: a tiny institution competing for the largest instruments in science.

What happened

  • Rankings. In the 2027 US News and World Report Best Colleges list released Sept 22, Caltech ranked fifth in a tie with Stanford - the institute's largest single-year climb in more than 25 years. It took first place on four of the 17 metrics: per-student financial resources, share of faculty publications in the top quartile of journals, graduate earnings relative to high school graduates, and standardised test scores, which Caltech resumed reporting this year after ending its four-year test-blind admissions policy (Caltech, Sept 22). It also ranked second for the second consecutive year on undergraduate research and creative opportunity.
  • A billion-dollar observatory. NASA selected PRIMA, the Probe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, a roughly $1 billion far-infrared space telescope. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which Caltech manages for NASA, will develop and operate the observatory, and Caltech's IPAC will serve as mission science centre - receiving, processing and archiving the data and scheduling telescope time. Margaret Meixner of Caltech/JPL is deputy principal investigator (Caltech, Sept 23).
  • Honours and arrivals. Physics professor Jamie Bock received NASA's Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal for SPHEREx and JPL research fellow Paul Rosen the Outstanding Public Leadership Award for NISAR, announced around Convocation on Sept 25, which welcomed 255 undergraduate students, 173 graduate students and 40 postdoctoral scholars, with plasma physicist Tammy Ma of the 2022 fusion ignition result as keynote (Caltech, Sept 28).

What it means for applicants

  • The ranking moved because of a policy you can copy. The test-score metric returned because Caltech resumed reporting. For applicants that is a direct signal: submitted scores now feed a system that rewards them.
  • Undergraduate access scales with instruments. A mission science centre on campus means data, scheduling and calibration work that undergraduates can be trained into. Name the facility in your questions, not the mission.
  • An institute of 2,300 is a fit decision. With roughly 1,000 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students, course choice is narrow and collaboration is compulsory. Weigh that against the access.

Caltech sits at rank 10 in the Atlas index with tuition near $61,000 for 2025/26 and a quality score of 89 - rounded planning values, not official reporting.
