International Students
Cornell narrowed internship approval for international students, and its enrolment mix moved
A Curricular Practical Training advisory, a new Collegetown dorm and the first full count after the affirmative action ruling.

Cornell hosts one of the largest international populations in the Ivy League, so an administrative change in Ithaca travels far.
What happened
- Work eligibility narrowed. Cornell International Services tightened Curricular Practical Training criteria for F-1 students after two Immigration and Customs Enforcement broadcast messages to SEVP-certified schools. CPT is now approved only where the placement is embedded in the curriculum, required of all students for degree completion and supported by a formal employer agreement (The Cornell Daily Sun, Sept 24).
- Enrolment composition. Black, Hispanic and Indigenous students make up 14 percent of the 3,681 expected first-year students in the Class of 2030, down from 17.9 percent in the previous class and the lowest share since the 2023 ruling that ended race-conscious admissions (The Cornell Daily Sun, Sept 27).
- Housing. Cornell opened a fourth Collegetown residence at 301 College Avenue, bought out of foreclosure for $15 million in March 2025; 43 students moved in during the first phase, with full capacity of 105 expected by autumn 2027 (The Cornell Daily Sun, Sept 7).
- Safety scrutiny. Local prosecutors reopened a criminal investigation into a 2024 alleged sexual assault at a fraternity house, and Ithaca's mayor called for a pause on Greek life and student group gatherings while the university reviews its protocols. Cornell said it supports the review and had completed a Title IX process that resulted in expulsions and suspensions (Inside Higher Ed, Sept 29).
- First semester elsewhere. First-year applicants to the Duffield College of Engineering and the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy may opt into Global Start Cantabria or DC Start, spending the opening term abroad or in Washington, DC before joining Ithaca (Cornell Admissions, Aug 11).
What it means for applicants
- International students: fit the internship to the degree. The three-part test means a placement must be a formal requirement of your programme. Get the department's answer in writing before accepting an offer.
- Read composition data as climate, not as a quota. A 14 percent share of an incoming class shapes study groups, student organisations and the support offices you will actually use in your first year.
- Housing scarcity is structural at a land-locked campus. Four university-owned Collegetown buildings against a very large applicant pool means the housing selection date deserves the same calendar warning as the essay deadline.
