New Jersey carries an unusual spread for its size: a private Ivy, the state university system, specialized technical institutes and a dense network of comprehensive and two-year colleges.
Research universities
- Princeton — mathematics, physics, public policy, engineering. Doctoral study is funded for most admitted candidates.
- Rutgers-New Brunswick — the full catalog: engineering, pharmacy, data science, agriculture, law, medicine.
- Rutgers-Newark — law, public affairs, computer science, urban health, on a downtown campus.
- Rutgers-Camden — biotechnology, business, engineering in the southern corridor.
Technical and specialized
- New Jersey Institute of Technology — computing, informatics, design and the innovation center in Newark.
- Stevens Institute of Technology — systems and financial engineering, five minutes from Manhattan by PATH.
Comprehensive campuses
Seton Hall (law, nursing, communication), The College of New Jersey (teacher education, nursing, engineering pathways), Rowan (engineering, media production), Montclair State (business, health, education), Kean, William Paterson, Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth round out the market.
Two-year entry
Bergen, Passaic County, Mercer, Brookdale, Ocean County, Camden County, Middlesex and County College of Morris all feed the four-year campuses with articulated transfers at a fraction of the cost. Berkeley College adds career-focused associate and bachelor programs online and on campus.
Pair one reach, two match and one safety school, and check each transfer agreement before you sign anything.
Enrolment, tuition and acceptance figures are rounded planning values compiled in 2025/26 for orientation. Verify exact numbers with each university's official fact sheet before you apply.
