Online & Hybrid
Online degrees: what accreditation really guarantees
Institutional versus programmatic accreditation, credit transfer and the visa trap.

Online delivery is normal at almost every accredited institution, but the label still hides three differences.
Check accreditation twice
- Institutional (regional) accreditation — the baseline. Without it credits rarely transfer and employers discount the credential.
- Programmatic accreditation — decisive in regulated fields: ABET for engineering, CCNE for nursing, AACSB or ACM for business and computing, APA for psychology.
Credit transfer
An online associate from a county college transfers well into a partner university when a written articulation agreement exists. Ask for the agreement, not the brochure.
The visa trap
Fully online study does not qualify an international student for an F-1 visa. Hybrid programs require in-person coursework per term, and the school must be certified to issue the I-20.
Cost
Online tuition is frequently lower than the campus rate at public universities, but technology and service fees can erase the saving. Compare per-credit cost plus fees.
Enrolment, tuition and acceptance figures are rounded planning values compiled in 2025/26 for orientation. Verify exact numbers with each university's official fact sheet before you apply.
