Penn extended the Wharton dean and ran a 24-hour case competition for $30,000

Trustees reported strong fiscal 2026 results and kept Erika James through 2032, while a generative AI studio became the campus build space.

Penn's late-September trustee meetings read like a stability statement, and the student-side events show how a business school turns that money into employable output.

What happened

  • Leadership. At the Sept 24 meetings the executive committee approved a second term for Wharton Dean Erika James, running to June 30, 2032, while administrators reported strong financial results for fiscal 2026 and introduced resolutions on Penn Medicine and construction projects (The Daily Pennsylvanian, Sept 28).
  • A 24-hour competition. Wharton's fourth annual Ideathon ran Sept 18-19 at the Baker Retailing Center: 18 teams of five to six students from undergraduate and graduate divisions pitched strategies for two sponsored business challenges, with $30,000 in prize money and $10,000 for first place (The Daily Pennsylvanian, Sept 21).
  • Building instead of lectures. The Wharton Generative AI Studio, part of the Wharton AI and Analytics Initiative under faculty director Ethan Mollick, replaces exams with prototyping, critique and weekly iteration for a year-long cohort of graduate and professional students (Wharton, Sept 11).
  • Wider access to speakers. The Turner Impact Learning Experiences programme opened what had been a selective fellows cohort to all Penn students and drew more than 15 times the attendance of the previous format in its inaugural year (Wharton, Sept 18).

What it means for applicants

  • Continuity in a dean's office shows up in the curriculum. A second term means the artificial intelligence, healthcare and quantitative finance investments announced under this leadership are likely to continue, which makes them safe areas to name as fit.
  • Competitions are visible recruiting funnels. Events with employer sponsors and cash prizes convert. If you are a first-year, the entry requirement is a team rather than a résumé, so start assembling people early.
  • Ask who pays for access. Programmes that opened to everyone in one step signal that demand, not eligibility, was the constraint - a useful question to ask at a campus visit.
