Admissions
Yale scrapped likely letters and went back to a required SAT or ACT
Two admissions changes in one semester, plus a Class of 2030 of 1,652 first-years, reshape how Yale College recruits.

Yale made two structural admissions changes for the 2026-27 cycle, and both land in the same semester it welcomed its largest undergraduate cohort.
What changed
- Likely letters are gone. The admissions office ended the practice of sending pre-decision indications of interest after an internal analysis showed little effect on yield, redirecting that staff time toward all regularly admitted students; the shift is budget-neutral (Yale Daily News, Sept 30). An online portal connecting admitted students with current students who opt in is under discussion.
- Testing is required again. From this cycle, first-year and transfer applicants must submit either the SAT or the ACT - a narrowing of the previous test-flexible policy that also accepted AP or IB scores (Yale Admissions, Aug 17).
- The class grew again. Yale College welcomed 1,652 first-year students, 28 transfers and 35 Eli Whitney adult students, 19 of them military veterans - the most Eli Whitney admissions in a single year since 2008 (Yale News, Sept 2). Undergraduate enrolment has risen close to 25 percent since the two new residential colleges opened in 2017, above 6,700 students.
What it means for applicants
- Stop waiting for a signal. Without likely letters, the regular decision notification is the only notification. Plan deposits and your aid comparison around a single date instead of an early hint.
- Book the test now. A required SAT or ACT with no AP or IB substitute moves the practical deadline back into the autumn of your final year. Register before the November and December sittings fill.
- Scale cuts both ways. A larger college means more sections, more advising capacity and more funded research slots - and a bigger pool competing for the same named fellowships.
